"Optimization of components for additive manufacturing"

This project aims to advance techniques for lattice optimization in the context of additive manufacturing using titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V). We study the full workflow from selection of parametrized base cells for stiffness optimization, the optimization algorithm, the interpretation of optimized results, as a macroscopic lattice design including predefined solid and void non-design regions, and the generation of a ready-to-print surface description of the lattice structure. For the field of structural optimization, the SGP (Sequential Global Programming) algorithm is advanced allowing the distinct choice between solid, void and lattice during the optimization process.

Material design by inverse homogenization

The goal of the project is to optimize periodic structures with respect to given constraints which are mostly defined in cooperation with engineers. The applied methods are especially chosen to respect manufacturing constraints and are developed further in this regard. Within the scope of two project cooperations different optimization tasks are investigated. On the one hand we optimize auxetic structures, i. e. ones with a negative Poisson's ratio, and secondly we produce designs for foam-like structures with maximal stiffness. The picture on the left shows a manufactured sample on the top and an animation of the optimization process on the bottom. The fabrication process is based on additive manufacturing through selective electron beam melting using a titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V) and allows for a direct translation of CAD models to real world objects. Compression tests can be performed to compare numerical simulation/ optimization results to manufactured structures. The optimization process uses a known structure as initial value and optimizes its properties iteratively.
